The big brains at the California Institute of Technology have figured out a way to create solar panels that have at least three very desirable characteristics: 1) They are very good at absorbing light, 2) they are mostly made of cheap plastic and only use a very small amount of expensive semiconductors, and 3) they are flexible. How do they do that?

A Photovoltaic (PV) system harnesses the power of sunlight to supply your home, office or factory with electricity. Photovoltaic systems produce electricity from sunlight through modules that are installed on your roof or elsewhere on your property. PV power doesn’t produce noise or pollution, it’s reliable, dependable and has no moving parts. It’s also renewable, so it's good environment.

The basic building block is the PV cell, which is connected to other cells to create larger units called modules. Modules are connected together to form panels or strings. The desired resulting voltage will determine the number of modules in a string. The number of strings will determine the capacity of your system. The finished panels are also called an array.

However, there are a few key points to account for when designing any home power system, to ensure it works as planned, and provides as much power as you need.You'll need to know which renewable energy sources will provide the most power in your location, whether you get a lot of wind, live next to a year-round river, or enjoy a lot of clear, sunny weather. In most cases, a combination of different power sources will be needed. The most common and versatile system would probably include solar panels for sunny days, wind generators for inclement weather, and a back up generator for weeks when mother nature refuses to cooperate. Folks lucky enough to live near a river or large year-round stream could possibly power their whole house with only 1 or 2 micro hydro generators though. Your individual location will determine your individual system.

Solar panels are available in types and sizes for everything from recharging AA batteries to powering large household electrical systems. You can buy small, flexible panels designed for maintaining a fully charged battery (ideal for vehicles that go into storage for months at a time). You can get household power panels ranging up to 120 watt models, and you can add multiple panels to expand the system to any size you need. Of course, the most durable, efficient and highest output panels will be more expensive than the lower-end models, but for large, long-term applications the greater initial outlay is worthwhile in the long run.

How Photovoltaic Panels Work

Solar electric panels are composed mainly of silicon. Silicon is used because it naturally releases electrons (electrical energy) when hit with a photon (light source). The trick for photovoltaic manufacturers was to find a way to "catch" the displaced electrons and use their energy.

Most solar panels consist of a clear protective top layer, two layers of specially treated silicon with collecting circuitry attached to the top layer, and a tough polymer backing layer. From there, the panel can be framed (adds durability) or unframed (reduces weight), and in some cases the layers are even comprised of flexible materials.
